Relationships: If you get
along, they’ll go along
Maxwell chose
Dr. William Osler, founder of the Association of American Physicians as the
role model for his “ability to show compassion and build relationships”. His three tips for improving relationships
are: improve one’s mind, strengthen one’s heart and repair a hurting
relationship. To conclude, Maxwell
recounted Ernest Hemingway’s “The Capitol of the World” where 800 Pacos showed
up in response to a father’s advertisement to his son Paco in which the father
declared his love for Paco and forgave Paco.

My thoughts
The adage “No
man is an island” is clique but true.
Nobody can survive alone.
Interaction with another human being will always take place, unless of
course, technology has progressed to such a state where even humans are
redundant with robots taking over every single function of daily
interactions. Maxwell’s concluding story
about 800 Pacos seeking to mend broken relationships was heartwarming, until I
read a Harvard Business Review article about a company tolerating the bullying
antics of its star performer because he brought in the revenue that he was
hired to. Will profit-making companies
be more keen on keeping a person who builds great relationship with his
colleagues and customers, but did not shine at sales figures, or a person who
propels his branch from second to bottom among the companies’ branches to most
profitable, but with turnover at a high of 40%?
