Gjergj Kastrioti at Skanderbeg Square

The Republic of Kosovo is a very young country and while I was in Pristina, the air was inexplicably full of a kind of youthful energy and optimism that I have never felt elsewhere in another city.

What I found quite intriguing was how the local guide pronounced Kosovo as "KosovA", which I had initially thought was the Kosovo way of pronouncing it.  Then I did some googling and guessed that she might probably be Albanian in ethnicity.  

In addition to Vlad III, now I know of another figure that fought against the Ottomans.  Vlad III and Gjergj Kastrioti were contemporaries, the former a Wallachia prince and the other an Albanian noble.  Resistance against the Ottoman Empire was a theme that the local guides in different regions of Eastern Balkans spoke about without failure.  

Rila Monastery

Surrounded by heavy low-hanging fog and incessant snowing, Rila Monastery is every bit as impressive when seen in person as the photographs taken of it with clear blue skies in Summer.

I could only enter the main church of the monastery, and not the surrounding residential blocks.  Not sure if it was a time constraint or that tourists are simply not allowed up there.

But the main church itself was the most impressive Eastern Orthodox monastery I have visited since the Savior on the Spilled Blood in St. Petersburg, with all that beautiful frescos and the large chandelier with ostrich eggs.

I could and would have spent an entire afternoon just looking at each and every fresco, but unfortunately being in a group meant this was impossible.  Perhaps I could return to Rila again in Summer and spend all the time I want at Rila Monastery.

Bran Castle!

I am still quite in awe that I visited Bran Castle - famously known as Count Dracula's castle and wrongly associated with the real Vlad III.  My tour manager oddly told the busload of us not to be afraid of the castle even though no vampires had been documented residing in Bran Castle.

The visit to Bran Castle was scheduled initially to be a five-minute walk from the Restaurant after lunch.  Due to two accidents on route, we arrived at the Restaurant after 5pm.  So in a twist of fate, Bran Castle could be seen in fading daylight and the atmospheric light-up when darkness fell.

The guide assigned to us had the good humour of still accepting our group despite us being terribly late, and was hilarious about the Victorian hit written by Irish Bram Stoker who had never set foot in Transylvanian still being THE marketing tool drawing tourists to Transylvania.  He was patient enough to explain to me that Vlad III was the ruler of WALLACHIA and not Transylvania (and where Wallachia is in relation to Transylvania) and how the impaling was carried out.  Which made me wanted to hear his opinion if Hotel Transylvania should rightly be titled Hotel Wallachia instead, but I guess for most people, Transylvania is a more recognizable name than Wallachia.  

In deep snow, Bran Castle looks every bit that medieval castle where time has simply stopped its relentless march along.  

Sheraton Bucharest Hotel

シェラトンホテルはマリオットブランドのプレミアムホテルカテゴリーに属し、フォーポイントホテルよりも一段階上の価格帯に位置する。

したがって、フォーポイントホテルと比較すると、この部屋はバスルームにフルサイズのバスタブがあり、より豪華です。洗面台エリアも非常に広いです。

ホテルは徒歩圏内にとても便利な場所にあると思いますが、残念ながら私がブルカレストに滞在していた時は雪とシャーベット状の雪がひどく、歩道を歩くのは楽しい体験とは言えませんでした。
 

Hotel Cubix Brasov

ベッドにこんなにたくさんの枕が用意されているホテルに泊まったのは初めてです！そして、バスルームが十分な広さで、素敵な白い照明が使われていたことに、嬉しい驚きを感じました。この旅行に行く前は、1989年まで共産主義国だった国がどんなところなのか、全く想像もつかなかった。

 このホテルはブラショフというルーマニアの魅力的な街に位置しており、私が滞在した時は深い雪に覆われていました。このホテルの近くにはバスターミナルのようなものがあり、そのすぐそばにはソ連時代を思わせる巨大な建物があった。それが何なのかは結局分からなかったが、巨大な集合住宅のように見えた。

このホテルの欠点のひとつは、レストランが朝食を早く始めるのを嫌がったことです。冬場は比較的早い時間に出発しなければならなかったのですが、レストランのガラス扉は自転車の鍵で施錠されていて、早く到着した客を締め出していました！

Mercure Sibiu Arsenal

Sibiu was a beautiful city even when it was covered under heaps of snow, and I'm sure it will be even more gorgeous in the other seasons.

Mecure Sibiu Arsenal is the second Mercure hotel I've stayed in (the first being the Mercure Sofia City) and I will no longer hesitate to book a room at another Mercure hotel if I have to reserve my accomodation (I hesitated to book a room at Mercure Okinawa Naha back then because I was not familiar with the brand, and went with another brand that I was familiar with).

At 21m2, my twin room didn't feel small or cramped, but the slightly narrow beds did make me worry about tumbling off it.  

The room was well equipped with tea and coffee making machines, and mineral water, and I must say that the bathroom design was quite sensible with the toilet and shower area separately by a spacious sink area.

The only drawback for the shower area is that water seems to pool at the opposite end of where the shower is located, and the ventilation is not strong enough to dry the shower area completely even after two hours.  This seems like a construction defect that was not rectified.

Grand Hotel Riga

The Grand Hotel Riga is located along the banks of the Danube River, which would make it a really attractive hotel to stay in.  Unfortunately, I was quite caught off-guard by the almost incesssant (heavy) snowing to even want to make that little walk to the banks of the Danube River in Ruse.

I was quite prepared to resign myself to the room I saw on Hotel Riga's website before I checked-in, but it seems to appear that I was allocated a more expensive room that had more interesting furniture and looked like more thought had gone into its design.  Perhaps this is a perk of patronising a hotel when most people would rather stay home in knee-deep snow!

The room was quite spacious and so was the bathroom.  I'm guessing that in the warmer summer months without all that heaps of snow and slush everywhere and when Ruse looks gorgeous in photographs, there would be no chance of me being allocated to such a room at this hotel at the rate I paid.

Holiday Inn Skopje

Holiday Inn Skopje is located along the Vardar River, which is a nice location, as there are many restaurants along the way from Skopje Old Town.  

The twin room and bathroom are decent and functional, and there even is a balcony, from which I retreated quite quickly as the temperature plunged unpon nightfall.

I didn't quite understand why housekeeping decided to place the bathroom glasses at the ledge above the toilet instead of on the vanity area around the sink.  But, I was quite happy to see that Holiday Inn provided tissue paper, which most hotels that I stayed in Eastern Balkans did not.  Is tissue not used much there, I wonder.

Mercure Sofia City

Ich habe noch nie in einem Mercure Hotel übernachtet, deshalb war ich sehr neugierig, wie die Zimmer aussehen würden.  Ich kam nach Einbruch der Dunkelheit im dichten Schneefall im Hotel an und wunderte mich, warum Leute in der Nähe des Hoteleingangs rauchten. Frieren die denn nicht bei Minusgraden?

Mein 20 m² großes Classic-Zimmer wirkte recht geräumig, und die Raumaufteilung erinnerte mich an mein Zimmer im Four Points by Sheraton in Hakodate.

Am Eingang des Zimmers befand sich eine Stelle zum Aufhängen von Jacken und eine Art „Wasserplatz“ für Wasserkocher, Tassen und Gläser.

Das Badezimmer war ebenfalls ausreichend groß, mit einem Waschbeckenbereich, der Toilette und Dusche voneinander trennte.

 Leider schneite es in der Nacht, als ich dort übernachtete, stark, und der Fahrer musste sich eine Schaufel vom Hotel ausleihen, um uns herauszuschaufeln.

Four Points by Sheraton Prishtina City

以前函館のフォーポイントバイシェラトンホテルに宿泊したことがあり、その非常に合理的な客室レイアウトが気に入っていました。

そのため、フリスティナ・シティにあるフォーポイント・バイ・シェラトンの客室もきっと快適だろうと、私はかなり期待していた。

日没後にホテルに到着したので、ホテルの周辺はかなり暗かった。ホテルのロビーも非常に薄暗く、最初は部屋も同様に薄暗いのではないかと心配になった。

幸いにも28平方メートルの部屋は明るかったが、記憶にある函館ホテルほど広々とは感​​じなかった。函館ホテルはもっと小さかったはずだ。

調べてみると、その28平方メートルの大部分は広い浴室に割り当てられていたことが分かった。トイレとシャワーエリアは、大きな洗面台を備えたシンクエリアで仕切られていた。これは私がこれまで泊まったホテルのバスルームの中でも、かなり広い部類に入るだろう。

翌朝、カーテンを開けると、隣の建物の部屋にバルコニーがあることに気づいた。きっとテラス付きの高級部屋だったのだろう。しかし、私は一泊だけの滞在だったので、テラスは必要なかった。

翌朝ホテルを出た時、ホテルが住宅街の真ん中に位置していることに気づきました。しかも、そこはフリスティナでも有数の高級住宅地だと聞きました。シェラトンがなぜあそこにホテルを建てたのか不思議です。

Hotel Belvedere Ohrid

Das Hotel Belvedere Ohrid ist eines der vielen Hotels am Ufer des Ohridsees und hat den ungewöhnlichsten Eingang aller Hotels, in denen ich bisher übernachtet habe.  Es gibt zwei Rampen, die zum Hoteleingang führen, wobei die zweite nicht mit Fahrzeugen befahren werden kann. Das bedeutet, dass man am Ende der ersten Rampe aussteigen und den ziemlich steilen Anstieg mit Gepäck zu Fuß hinaufsteigen muss.  An einem regnerischen oder verschneiten Tag kann der Aufstieg an dieser Steigung wirklich eine ziemliche Plackerei sein.

Mein Zweibettzimmer hatte einen angrenzenden Balkon, der recht groß ist und auf ein Waldgebiet blickt.

Das Badezimmer hatte einen etwas seltsamen Duschbereich mit Schiebetüren, die ständig aus den Schienen rutschten, sodass das Öffnen und Schließen der Türen ziemlich nervenaufreibend war.  

Im Badezimmer war ein Heizkörper bzw. ein beheizter Handtuchhalter installiert, aber nachdem ich ihn nicht einschalten konnte, fragte ich an der Rezeption nach und mir wurde gesagt, dass er nicht funktioniere.  Seufz. Und ich war anfangs so froh, einen Heizkörper im Badezimmer zu sehen, und dann so enttäuscht zu hören, dass er nicht funktioniert.

津軽藩ねぷた村

弘前もねぷた祭りが行われる都市の一つで、ねぷた祭りの時期に弘前に行けない人にとって、津軽藩ねぷた村はねぷたを見たりねぷた文化を体験したりするのに最適な場所です。

弘前のねぷたは、青森のねぷたとは違います。弘前のねぷたは主に扇形ですが、青森のねぷたは長方形です。五所川エリアにある立佞武多の館では、別のタイプのねぷたが展示されていますが、残念ながら改修工事のため休館中で、縦長のねぷたを見ることができませんでした。

Wa Rasse

青森で最も有名な祭りはねぶた祭りでしょう。ねぶた祭りは8月の第1週に開催され、毎年作られる豪華な山車の音と光が騒々しいイベントです。

ねぶた祭りの時期に青森に行けない人のために、青森県にはねぶたを専門に扱う博物館があります。

WA RASSEは青森駅に隣接しており、ねぶた祭りを理解するには最適な場所です。

WA RASSEを訪れる前は、青森のパンフレットを集めていて、ねぶたの山車が毎回違うことに戸惑っていました。今では、毎年新しいねぶたが作られ、その入賞作品がWA RASSEで展示されているのだと分かりました。

2025年のねぶた祭りは海王が優勝しました。

木造駅与つがる市縄文住居展示資料館 （カルコ）

在一本旅游攻略书中作者提议若有时间可乘搭无能缐于木造站下车看一看木造站。照片让我有些怀疑是照骗。怎可能有人把车站外观搞个这么大的土偶？

虽然挺怀疑的，还是拨出一个早上的时间到了木造站。

果真，踏出车站就是个巨大的遮光器土偶，我还真的挺傻眼的。而且，要将整个车站入镜，我还得退到神武食堂那儿，有够夸张的。

木造站的班次不多。等待回程的当儿，翻山越岭的 （玩笑话，其实都是平地）到了展示资料馆看了一下。欲买入场卷时，负责人正在看报纸，没回过神来。大概外来的参观者不多吧。

真正的遮光器土偶在东京的国立博物馆，这个资料馆展示的是复制品。但因没其他旅客，我可以慢慢的看这复制品，也算不错吧。

三沢航空科学館

わざわざ三沢まで行く理由がただ一つあるとすれば、それは三沢航空科学館を訪れ、美しく復元されMiss Veedolを見ることでしょう。実際のところ、この復元されたミス ヴィードルが本物のミス ヴィードルなのか、レプリカなのか私にはわかりません。博物館の説明を正確に読んだのであれば、使用されている用語は「復元」であり、実際にレプリカである場合、「復元」という用語はあまり適切ではないでしょうか?

ミサワ大空ひろばには、かつて運航していた古い航空機を見るために訪れる価値もあります。

五大堂

仙台から松島海岸まで走る電車は少し古いですが、乗客にいつ向かうのかを思い出させるために車両の外側に装飾が施されているのを見て、私はとても嬉しく思いました。

松島海岸では日本三景の石碑を見て嬉しくなりました。今回の松島海岸訪問で、日本の3つの名所全てを訪れたことになります！

そして今回の訪問で、私は春子を通してだけではなく、自分の目で五大堂の透かし橋を見ることができました。
