Had tea break at one of the Parits (Malay for Kampung) in Johor, I think it was near Batu Pahat, where there were all-you-can-eat typical Malay food such as fried chicken (top left in the plate), ketupat (top right in the plate), kueh made of gula melaka (brown item between the fried chicken and ketupat), and something else wrapped in banana leaves which I have no idea what it was.
This is the first time I have seen ketupat leaves yellow instead of green, not sure if that was because the ketupats had been boiled for long such that the chlorophyll in the leaves have all seeped out, or if a different type of banana leaves were used. The keputat tastes different, with the texture of the rice also to the extent of mashed rice. I suppose when too much water is added to rice to cook for long, grains of rice eventually become porridge-like. But the ketupat smells more naturally fragrant, without artificial man-made additives.
The texture of the kueh was also better, less bouncy like those where more tapioca flour had been added, and it wasn't too sweet.
