Ekiben [Japan] [お弁当]

A long train ride, especially on the shinkansen, is never complete without carrying an ekiben onboard to eat.

No matter how I looked at it, it was quite impossible to last the Hayabusa journey between Tokyo and Shin Hakodate Hokuto without a meal, so it was off to the very conveniently located Ekibenya Matsuri just outside the faregates to the Shinkansen section of Tokyo station.

Bustling with travellers, Ekibenya Matsuri offers a wide range of ekibens, not just those from Tokyo, and also the more popular ones from other stations.

Just had to pick a few.

石狩鮭めし from Sapporo Station

What better way to start a journey than to taste food from the destination?

On a bed or rice was plenty of cooked shredded salmon and salmon roe, a taste from the 12th year of Taisho.

From 賛否両論: 醤油かつ重

I don't usually eat shoyu katsu, so this is an interesting pick.

いかめし from Hokkaido

Ikameshi is another instantly recognizable ekiben from Hokkaido, with rice stuffed into marinated and grilled squids.  Carbs and protein checked, but not vegetables.  Still makes a filling lunch.

Shumai ekiben (not from Tokyo)

The manufacturer of this ekiben is not from Tokyo, couldn't understand why it was called Tokyo shumai ekiben.  But the retroish wrapper was just too inviting not to pick this up.  And it is quite difficult to go wrong with shumai.  I was surprised shumai that doesn't come piping hot from the dim sum trolley can be delish too.

These ekibens were bought from the tiny Kiosk at Shin Hakodate Hokuto station, before the long journey back to Tokyo.

Kanimeshi from Hakodate

Hokkaido is about crabs, so it is just fitting to pick a kanimeshi as a rembrance of a Hokkaido summer.

Butawappameshi from Hakodate

Another Hakodate dish to remember by.

Kitabokazoku from Hakodate

This is a normal makunouchi bento, with a wrapper featuring the Orthodox church at the top of the Hakodate zakka.

Not too sure which manufacturer is this from, but definitely a Hokkaido ekibenya.

2 large succulent scallops!! 'nuff said.
