Cowboys & Aliens

With a backdrop that resembles the wild west, Cowboys & Aliens brought together James Bond and Indiana Jones, back into the late 1800s where James Bond had no access to his fancy gadgets (oh but he did have one in this film) and could not ask for “martini, shaken, not stirred”.  They teamed up to rescue people abducted from the town in a scene not unlike War of the Worlds.  Instead of huge tripods, flying machines hooked people up and away.  Together with another friendly alien “from beyond the stars” and local natives, James Bond and Indiana Jones trekked to the alien mother-ship, from where James Bond escaped with a curious mind-control cuff that was lethal to the aliens after a vivisection.  Similar to War of the Worlds, the humans (and another friendly alien) worked together and rid the earth of malevolent aliens hungry for earth’s gold.

I have no idea what to make of Cowboys & Aliens.  It is like a mash-up of many alien-themed movies, and seemed to be paying homage to quite a few of them.  Why the movie is set in the late 1800s and features cowboys is puzzling to me as well.  Perhaps the scriptwriters felt that back in those days, humans might have contact with aliens as well.
