Bother frequent flyer miles: an update

I filled out an online feedback at Cathay Pacific's website on 8 Dec, and Asia Miles called me.

Apparently, the flight I took was of a class that did not qualify for mileage accumulation.  The call agent then proceeded to rattle off a list of classes that would qualify for mileage accumulation, so that I would know if my flight is to be eligible for miles.

Bother! So there are differences in classes that qualify for mileage accumulation.  I don't fly like every other month, and I don't fly the same airline all the time.  I go with availability, and what the travel agent recommends is the best price. and arriving at a decent time so that my holiday plans are not in a mess because I arrive at 5am at the airport with no connections to the city centre.  How am I supposed to know that certain classes do not accrue miles when even the checkin agent at the airport assured me that the flight would?

Why should the customer have better knowledge of a company's products than the company's employee?
