The Road: The Tragedy of One 더 로드: 1의 비극 [tvN]

The 12-episode The Road: The Tragedy of One (One) is based on the Japanese novel Ichi no Higeki, also adapted into a FujiTV drama in 2019.  The 2021 korean adaption stars Ji Ji-hee and Yoon Se-ah in the lead roles.  Chun Ho-jin and Kim Hye-eun provided credible performances as the counterfoil.

The plot itself started fairly straight forward enough.  A news anchor seeking to expose the corrupt dealings of a powerful chaebol - who happens to be his father-in-law.  Apparently not so innocent of wrong doings himself, the news anchor found his son the target of a kidnap attempt when another boy living in the same exclusive estate was found dead instead.

And so, it took 11.5 episodes of pretend-noir, secretive hints of wrong doings of practically every resident of the exclusive estate before the truth was rushed out in the last 30 mins of the drama.

There were plenty of subplots meant to distract of the actual plot of 2 murders (or 2 accidental deaths) in the estate that it was easy to be carried along and be lost by the inconsistent editing and wondering why all the characters seemed to be out-of-this-world in the secret burdens they carried.  Ji Ji-hee's character was unbelievably unbelievable.  And his friend the detective was given plenty of screentime, yet I can't fanthom the purpose of his existence in the plot afterall.

One could have been edited even tighter and be shorter than the 12 episodes while cutting out a lot of unnecessary subplots and posturing by the cast that came to an Argh?! what was that for?!
