Outside of Yangon, practically every female and child had their cheeks smeared with the grated paste of the tanaka tree. As our guide explained, tanaka contains sunscreen properties and is used by the Myanmese people as a skincare product.
It was quite a shock to see the cheeks smeared with tanaka, but it's a distinctive feature of the Mynamese people, who bring this habit overseas. I do wonder how the female who gave me a shock back home with tanaka smeared on her cheeks obtained her supplies far away from home.
